WHAT IS A WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM?
A wastewater treatment system is formed by different treatment stages such as mechanical, biological, and chemical processes combined to remove pollutants from water, addressing the environmental quality requirements for wastewater discharged into the environment by each factory.

IMPORTANT STAGES OF THE SYSTEM
-
Preliminary treatment stage:
This stage aims to remove large-sized waste to prevent damage or clogging of machinery and equipment. Mainly, mechanical treatment processes are used here. Screens and grit chambers are commonly used to remove large waste materials such as trash and leaves from wastewater.
-
Primary treatment stage:
In this stage, wastewater is primarily treated using mechanical and chemical methods to remove settleable solids (sand), suspended solids (suspended solids, colloidal particles), grease, etc. Primary settling tanks, flotation tanks, coagulation-flocculation tanks, etc., are commonly applied technologies in this stage.
-
Secondary treatment stage:
This stage is used to treat remaining dissolved organic matter in wastewater. Biological treatment methods are predominantly applied in this stage, utilizing the ability of microorganisms to degrade dissolved organic matter to treat pollutants in wastewater. For some types of wastewater with high chemical oxygen demand (difficult-to-biodegrade organic matter), chemical methods are applied simultaneously with biological methods, helping to degrade some of the difficult-to-biodegrade organic matter using chemicals (e.g., advanced oxidation methods like Fenton oxidation) to reduce pollutant concentrations before further biological treatment.
-
Secondary settling stage:
This stage is used to remove and recycle excess microbial sludge in the system. Some types of settling tanks such as sedimentation tanks, centrifugal sedimentation tanks, etc., are used.
-
Disinfection stage:
This stage is to remove any remaining harmful bacteria by disinfection with chlorine, ultraviolet light, etc., before discharging into the receiving water bodies.
-
Additionally, there are some wastewater treatment methods (though less commonly used or only applied to specific types of wastewater) such as water filtration, biofilter columns, etc.

Examples of wastewater from different industries and the corresponding treatment technologies applied:
- Wastewater from leather factories: Due to the presence of hazardous metals (such as Chromium), dye colors, and acidity in wastewater from leather factories, chemical treatment is required to reduce the concentration of Chromium before biological treatment can be effective.
- Wastewater from seafood processing plants: Wastewater from seafood processing plants mainly contains easily biodegradable organic compounds such as proteins, fats, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc. Therefore, efficient treatment can be achieved primarily through biological methods.
- Wastewater from pharmaceutical and veterinary drug manufacturing plants: The characteristic pollutants commonly found in wastewater from veterinary drug facilities are organic compounds that undergo biological and chemical degradation, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc. Therefore, a combination of chemical and biological methods is required for thorough treatment of this type of wastewater.
