Operating Wastewater Treatment Systems - Easy or Challenging?

Nanoen - Operational work is not just about starting up the system but also understanding the operational processes and having specialized knowledge. Therefore, operations can pose high risks and take a lot of time to troubleshoot if we do not have someone knowledgeable about the wastewater treatment system in charge.

Operating a wastewater treatment system is not just a matter of starting it up; it requires a clear understanding of the operational procedures and specialized knowledge. Therefore, operating it without expertise can pose high risks and may require a significant amount of time to troubleshoot if there isn't someone familiar with the system in charge.

The operation of a wastewater treatment system cannot be discussed without mentioning the role of the operator. Operating the wastewater treatment system is the most crucial stage to ensure the smooth operation of the system and timely response to any incidents.

Operating the wastewater treatment system involves ensuring that the treated wastewater meets discharge standards and that the system operates according to the technological process proposed in the design.

The wastewater treatment system is tasked with treating harmful substances and pollutants to the extent permitted for discharge into the environment. Typically, a system consists of three stages:

  • Physical treatment stage: This stage utilizes mechanical methods to preprocess the wastewater before it enters the treatment system.

  • Chemical treatment stage: Chemical methods are employed to treat pollutants that are resistant to biological degradation.

  • Biological treatment stage: Often the primary stage of the system, this stage utilizes microorganisms to degrade organic compounds present in the wastewater.

Throughout the operation of the wastewater treatment system, the operator needs to ensure the completion of the following tasks:

  • Regularly monitor the system's operation.

  • Assess the condition of the system and record operational parameters such as dissolved oxygen concentration and chemical dosage.

  • Observe the condition of the activated sludge tank.

  • Check the influent and effluent wastewater concentrations.

  • Checking the processing stages within the system.

  • Maintenance - servicing the system in case of malfunctions.

  • Inspecting the operation of electrical devices and implementing clean production practices to optimize energy consumption for the system.

Employees responsible for operation need to monitor the system regularly

The basic requirements and tasks of an operator in this position include:

  • Having fundamental knowledge about wastewater treatment systems.

  • Drawing charts showing the variation of concentration and flow rate of wastewater corresponding to different times of the day.

  • Planning operations to address any issues with machinery, equipment, chemicals, microbiology, etc.

  • Preparing operation logs and parameter tables for monitoring wastewater quality.

  • Regularly inspecting pipelines to prevent leaks, which could result in unnecessary expenses for the investor.

  • Testing the acidity-alkalinity and dissolved oxygen levels in the wastewater, supplementing nutrients for microorganisms, and adding chemicals daily or per operational shift.

  • Continuously monitoring the system's operations and machinery to promptly detect any unusual sounds or unstable activities.

  • Establishing usage standards for chemicals, electricity, maintenance, etc., to optimize operational planning.

Through this, we understand that operating a system is not simply about starting it up but also requires a thorough understanding of the operation process and specialized knowledge of the job. Therefore, operation can pose high risks and may require significant time to troubleshoot if there isn't someone knowledgeable overseeing the wastewater treatment system.
